Tips for Surviving Being Single

I usually have the following conversation several times a year:

People: "you went by yourself"
Me: "yeah....?"
People: "I could never do that"

Why not?
What's stopping you?

When I moved here five years ago,
I knew no one.
I still only know a handful of people.
A social life was non existent for a long time.

So I learned to step up to the plate.
I went to movies by myself.
I still do.
More popcorn for me.
I friggin' love popcorn.

I took skiing lessons by myself.
And even went skiing without anyone riding the lift with me.
Snow shoeing at a state park.
Yep.

Eating out.
This can be easy or tough.
Depending on the time of day or day of the the week.

Pedicures.
Great time to ease drop on the women chatting.
Entertainment at it's finest!
Bonus points if your pedicurist speaks English,
and you can hold a conversation with them

So here's some tips I have learned along the way.

1.
Go to the movie shortly before it starts, not any sooner.
You sit down, get comfy, and movie begins.
No awkwardness about being alone.

2.
Do something you always wanted to do,
but no one else wanted to.
Like skiing.
If you suck, or embarrass yourself.
no one will ever know!
Or you just may be super awesome at it,
and will impress people if you ever go with anyone else!

3.
Eating out can be hard.
Lunch times are great.
Most lunchers are on break and by themselves too.
Plus the food service is super quick.
If you want to socialize,
hit the restaurant "rush hours"
i.e. Friday and Saturday after 6
Sit at the bar.
The bartender can make great conversation

I ran across this article a few weeks ago and love it.

  1. Love this! I go to a lot of concerts alone - and usually bring a book for downtime in between acts!

  3. This is fantastic. :) I have so much fun being single sometimes, but I do have a hard going out to eat or going to get a drink by myself. I can't seem to muster up the courage to sit down at the bar by myself!

  4. Even though I am in a relationship, we often have different schedules and I love doing things alone and treating myself to meals out.
